Holding Heaven Close • hand-pulled block print

$35.00

Joseph and Jesus in the wee hours, wrapped in love.

His dedication, example, guidance, and sacrifice would make it possible for the Son of God to grow from grace to grace.

In societies where men, and especially men of color, are too-often assumed to be absent in parenthood or lacking in affection, I ask:  Has there ever been a better adoptive father?

Joseph is my preeminent example of humility, trust in the Lord’s plan, and stepping up to the task.

Who else could be trusted with raising the Only Begotten?

I chose to create this series in block print, to touch on the physicality of being created in the image of God, and all being alike unto Them.  The creation of this block through carving away is a reference to their profession. Physically removing all that is unnecessary to communicate truth is a mediation on removing centuries of misguided imagery and erasure of culture.

Through exploring a variety of melanated hues for both Joseph and Jesus in my hand-embellished variations of this block print, I hope to communicate the breadth and variation of God’s children and the importance of experiencing culture in context.

Most importantly, that we can find ourselves in God - and find God in ourselves - not regardless of our earthly heritage,

but because of it.
